Cycling: a practical, fun and enjoyable way to get around Paris! But, you may say, you didn’t come with your bike on the plane or on the train... Never mind!
Indeed, since July 2007, the Paris City Hall has made available to everyone a system of self-service bicycles, called Vélib’ (bicycle contraction and freedom).
By definition, the system includes bicycles, but also bollards, equipped with a display and an intercom system, and «terminals» for attaching bicycles.
Twenty vans are in charge of regulating the distribution of bicycles by moving them, especially at night or in the early morning, from saturated stations to empty ones.
You take your bike to one of the... Velib stations, you drop it off at any other station! and that’s it... It’s Paris liberté!
Each station has a terminal where you can request a bike rental, obtain information on the Vélib’ service, or contact an advisor. Equipped with a credit card payment terminal, it also allows you to subscribe to a short-term subscription.
You can take passes from 1 to 7 days. In all cases, you benefit from a first half-hour free of charge, the following ones being charged (see rates).
Vélib’ are fixed on attachment points, called «bornettes».
Bicycles are unisex. They have three integrated speeds, permanent front and rear lighting on dynamo and a basket in front of the handlebar.
They also have an additional lock with a key. It is sufficient to protect the bicycle during a short absence, for example to go to a small shop.
They cannot be used by young children (minimum size: 150 cm) and it is therefore only possible to take out a subscription from the age of fourteen.
Each bike weighs 22.5 kg, which is relatively heavy.
The Velib’ Metropole service now offers electric bicycles.
There are about 30% of them.
Of course! There are even many of them, see for yourself on the station map (each station is indicated by a green bubble).
